Good Luck Owl Dobby - Indigo
These aren't your ordinary owls... some have traditional Japanese motifs on their bellies, and others have the Japanese word fuku (?), or good fortune, on their midsections. Owls are associated with good luck in Japan at least partially because the Japanese word for owl, fukur? (?), is closely linked to fuku. Owls also represent wisdom and protectors against hardship, and this symbolism is also shown in this design with the word ??? (without hardship). All of this symbolism means that owls are often seen in engimono (???), or good luck charms, and owl-related gifts are considered auspicious for graduating students.
In Tokyo, the Ikebukuro district is associated with owls, and you will find many references to the nocturnal raptors in the area, including a famous statue near the train station, topiaries shaped like owls reading books, and a police station designed with large, round windows to resemble the face of an owl.
