Classic Modern Quilts

The Kansas City Star was renowned for a widely popular series of quilt blocks published in the newspaper from 1928 to 1961, and still avidly sought after by quilters. These patterns, and others inspired by them, have been published by Kansas City Star Books—who here gave ten top designers a challenge: create a modern quilt inspired by a historical Kansas City Star block. The results, from Lisa Calle, Lynne Goldsworthy, Lauren Hunt, Heather Kojan, John Kubiniec, Adrianne Ove, Trisch Price, Tammie Schaffer, Amy Smart, and Susan Strong, range from solidly traditional to highly contemporary; each is a true representation of its maker and her or his definitions of modern quiltmaking. The projects cover a range of quilting experience required, including several for beginners, and the designers offer their thoughts on modern quiltmaking, explaining how they progressed from the traditional block to the modern quilt.
