Hive: Intro to Illusion Knitting

Students will learn the basics of what illusion knitting is and how it works. We will work on a scarf using illusion knitting and they will learn how to read illusion knitting charts. We will also discuss how to select good yarns and colors for illusion knitting projects, getting good gauge so your illusion shows up, as well as a few finishing techniques.

Prerequisites: Intro to Knitting or equivalent experience; student should know how to cast on, knit, purl, and cast off.

Bring to Class:

  • Pattern (please purchase and print at home in advance of class)
  • US 9 Needles (size 9 is used in the pattern, but we recommend bringing a few sizes with you in case you need to adjust)
  • US F crochet hook (if doing a crocheted border)
  • Approx. 220 yds of color-changing worsted weight yarn (Noro Taiyo is a great option)
  • Approx. 240 yds of a solid, contrast color worsted weight yarn
  • Darning needle for weaving in ends
  • Stitch markers (optional, but can be helpful!)
About the Instructor:

Elizabeth is a lifelong artist, but found her true creative calling the day she learned to crochet, and then to knit. She holds a design degree from The Art Institute of Pittsburgh and spent 10 years working as a graphic designer before moving to CA, and into the world of yarn.

She worked at her favorite local yarn shop for 5 years, teaching and helping match people to yarn and projects, and started designing knit and crochet patterns while there. She publishes designs on Ravelry under Elizabeth Kay Booth and has worked with Zen Yarn Garden, Brown Sheep Company, and Colinton Australia. She has also been commissioned to design knit and crochet patterns for the annual LA Yarn Crawl, and spent a year on the board of her local knitting guild, Knerdy Knitters.

Other tidbits about her - she loves to read, favorite topics being fashion, design and designers, art, and biographies of favorite artists. She is based in Los Angeles and never takes the inspiration of mountains and ocean for granted. If she's not making something with yarn, it is to be in nature, preferably in the ocean or on a mountaintop. She also takes breaks from yarn to spend time with her husband, 2 children, 2 rescue cats, and rescue dog.

She shares her life and hopefully inspires people at www.elizabethkaybooth.com.
